Australia takes 2011 Nomura Cup home

Australia scooped the 2011 Nomura Cup ending the tournament with a total of 840. New Zealand came in second with a team score of 861, and India third with 865. Defending champions Korea finished at 4th with 870. Fiji ended the tournament on 11th place with a total score of 910.

In the individual category, Cameron Smith of Australia who led from day 1 took out the prize.

The closing ceremony and dinner ended in much pomp at the Denerau Golf Club with a team march in and performances by the Chinese Youth Group made up of current and past Yat Sen Secondary School students, and the Robinson Crusoe Island Dance Group.

Samoa was the first team to depart our shores soon after their game on Friday to catch their 6pm flight to Apia. Majority of teams return to their home today, Saturday 20 August, whilst a handful are scheduled to depart on Sunday.

 Australia continues its lead


Natadola: Thursday 18 August 2011. Day three of the 2011 Nomura Cup ended with Australia still leading on 639, followed by New Zealand on 652 and India 2 strokes further back on 654. Korea, the reigning champions are lying fourth on 663. Fiji still maintains its 11th position on 693 and needs a strong finish tomorrow to oust Thailand who lies 10th on 692.


For the team scores on day three, New Zealand came out best with a team gross of 217 and Australia and India returned scores of 220.


In the individual competition, Cameron Smith of Australia bogeyed the last hole and returned with a 73 however still maintains his lead on 5 under. He is followed by Ryan Fox of New Zealand on 2 under and Jake Higginbottom of Australia on 1 under par. Fiji's Vikrant Chandra has dropped to 7th placing and is still in the running for the Bonallack Trophy selection.


Friday 19 August, will be the final day of the competition and the game moves back to Denarau.

Natadola: Wednesday 17 August 2011. Vikrant Chandra scored an eagle on his last hole on the 9th hole at the Natadola Championship Golf Course returning with 71, one under par. He is one of the leaders in the individual category, tied at fourth with Jae Hyeok Lee of Korea with a score of 142 after two days. Jae Hyeok had the best score for the day with a 68.


Cameron Smith of Australia is the current leader at 138, having scored 71, one under par today. Jake Higginbottom also of Australia is currently second with a score of 139 after day two. Ahmed Al Musharrek of UAE is third with a score of 141.


In the teams category, Australia continues to lead after day 2 recording a score of 419. Jake Higginbottom scored 70, two under par today. Marika Batibasaga and Cameron Smith scored 71, one under par to take their team ahead. Korea came in second with 431 whilst India is now third with a score of 434.


 

The weather held up well at Natadola today, and with the wind down in the afternoon, all the players took full full control of the situation to bring in some good scores in the afternoon.


Day three continues at Natadola tomorrow, Thursday 18 August.

Nomura Cup Players Trial for Bonallack Trophy

 

Denarau: Tuesday 16 August 2011. The Nomura Cup 2011 currently being played in Fiji will also be the trial and selection of the Asia Pacific Team to participate in the Bonallack Trophy that will be played in Algrave, Portugal in April 2012.


The Nomura Cup tournament is a teams competition featuring four players each from the eighteen participating countries. The twelve best individual players in this Nomura Cup will be selected to represent Asia Pacific in Portugal.


Based on performances after day one at the Denarau Golf and Racquet Club, the stand out players were the following who all returned with under par scores.

The Bonallack Trophy is the amateur version of the Ryder Cup where an Asia Pacific team opposes a European team. The Bonallack tournament is held every two years. The 2010 competition in India was canceled as a result of the Iceland volcano eruption, which prevented the European team from traveling to India to participate. Europe is the defending champions, having won the event in 2008 in Spain.

Australia currently leads the team event on 207 after day one. Following closely is India on 208 and third is New Zealand on 211.

2011 Nomura Cup Opening

Denarau, Tuesday 15 August 2011

The Nomura Cup 2011 was officially opened by the President of Fiji and Patron of National Golf Association of Fiji yesterday.  A traditional welcoming ceremony was accorded to the President of Asia Pacific Golf Confederation and all players, officials and visitors participating in the 2011 Nomura Cup.

The teams tee off today at the Denarau Golf Club. Tomorrow and Wednesday teams will play at the Natadola Golf Club.
